The game felt almost completely devout of the humor that I normally love about Monkey Island. Return to Monkey Island is the exact opposite. Serious, and yet left me with a really good feeling. And it had an ending that was surprisingly deep and emotional. It captured the essence of what I love about the series superbly. In my opinion Tales of Monkey Island was by far the best in the series. In terms of stability and interface I have nothing to point any fingers at for this game.Other than that, I'm sorry to say I'm rather disappointed. they kinda of ended up playing it straight. Which, in an ironic twist, even if it is clearly a satire to that, to creators trying to revive their glory days. So much about letting the past in the past and enjoy the present and yet the game is plagued with references to two games that only the actually older fans in almost their 40s will know (I literally grew with Curse and only later on learned that there was a 1 and 2).ĮDIT: In a meta sense, the theme can be seen as original creators trying to revive an old franchise and how sometimes that is a futile effort. Which, for the record, makes it ANOTHER reference yet again holy shit they failed at their own message. And then the theme park twist ending that IT DIDN'T EVEN MATTER cause Guybrush himself admits he made that part up. So many, MANY, references to 1 and 2, and mostly just those two. But the, so much on the fucking nose, moral of the story is that the past and the journey that you have made are memories to cherish in your later years and enjoy the now instead of obessing in the past. Guybrush wants to revive "his glory days" but instead does a lot of actual harm and is selfish about it cause he HAS TO GET THE SECRET. The theme of the story is literally a middle life crissis. It's like people forget about that for a couple.of years and remember it when they are oldER.įor people that might have missed it. Still liked far more 3, 4 and 5, had more FUN with them, which, SHOCKER, is important no matter how old you are. Cause EVEN if this a relevant story for adults and old fans, you could have at least made it more FUN and not so on the bloody nose. But while I "understand" what their intentions were, I did not have fun with this journey. I don't think the amount of harrasment Ron Gilbert has gotten for the game is fine, fuck off if you do. I get why the devs did this, where they coming from, even what their target audience was. But it ends up being used as an argument in the "maybe you are obsessing so much about your prime that you are wasting your present and harming people on the way instead of fondly remembering what you achived? Which is a key element of adulthood?" conversation. That was so unnecessary cruel and luckily he is confronted about it later on. And when Guybrush destroys the mop tree, and didn't even comment on the pretty obviously distressed and crying critters, yeah I did not like that. so it is a story about being past your prime, being nostalgic for your glory days, and how the new generations are whom are on top now. But I started seeing a "theme" pretty early in the game, the "theme of the game" if you will. I love the Monkey Island games, they are fun and absurd pirate adventures. Personally during the whole game I had this.
